Game 23 Preview: Flyers vs. Devils

Philadelphia Flyers (11-10-1) will host the New Jersey Devils (10-9-1) on Thursday evening. Game time at the Wells Fargo Center is 7:00 p.m. ET.

The Flyers enter this game coming off a 4-1 home loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday. A second period breakaway goal by Travis Konecny (12th of the season), off a nice lead pass from Tyson Foerster, temporarily tied the score at 1-1. A turnover by Scott Laughton on a clearing pass attempt and a fluky (and very ill-timed) third period goal given up by Carter Hart on a puck that wedged in his skate and then put in the net by the goalie on an initially harmless shot proved to be the difference. Carolina tacked on an empty net goal for a final three-goal margin.

The Flyers, who are at 9.9 percent on the power play for the season and 0-for-10 in their last four games, spent a portion of Wednesday's practice working on their power play. At even strength, line rushes suggested some tweaking off Tuesday's starting combos but nothing like the "forward lines in a blender" look to the second and third periods of that game.

On the injury front, the Flyers will be without Noah Cates (broken foot suffered on Nov. 25) until mid-to-late January.

Based on Wednesday's practice lines and defense pairs, veteran blueliner Marc Staal -- who has largely struggled in four games since returning from an upper-body injury that kept him out for over a month -- could be a healthy scratch against the Devils. If so, Egor Zamula would return to the lineup. The Flyers will have a 10:30 a.m. ET morning skate at the Flyers Training Center in Voorhees.

The Devils enter this game having won back-to-back games. They came from behind (1-0 and 4-2) to defeat the Islanders, 5-4, on Tuesday. Three unanswered goals by the Devils in the third period swung the final outcome. Akira Schmid won the game in goal in relief of Vitek Vanecek.

New Jersey's win was a costly one as defenseman Dougie Hamilton exited the game in the second period and did not return. The likes of Timo Meier and Erik Haula are also currently dealing with injuries.

The Devils will not hold a morning skate on Thursday. Head coach Lindy Ruff will announce his starting goaltender and any lineup adjustments late in the afternoon. Lineups below will be updated if available prior to gametime.
