Game 61 Preview: Flyers @ Devils
John Tortorella's Philadelphia Flyers (23-27-10) are in Newark on Saturday to take on Lindy Ruff's New Jersey Devils (38-15-5). Game time is 7:00 p.m. ET.
This is the fourth and final meeting of the season between the Metro Division clubs, and the second game at the Rock. The Flyers are 2-1-0 in the season series thus far.
The Flyers have had a rough month as they enter their final game in February. The team has gone 2-6-1 since the All-Star break.
Last night, the Flyers were severely outplayed by a Montreal Canadiens in a
5-2 blowout. The Habs, who are below the Flyers in the standings and severely injury-riddled with 13 players missing from the lineup, outplayed Philly in every facet.
The only bright spots: Owen Tippett (17th goal of the season) played a strong game and racked up eight shots on goal in 10 shot attempts. Linemate Morgan Frost assisted on both Flyers goals. Ivan Provorov (4th goal of the season) worked a nice give-and-go late in the game with Tony DeAngelo. Beyond that, positives for the Flyers were few and far between.
New Jersey trailed LA, 2-0, after the first period. In the second period, Tomas Tatar (13th) cut the deficit to one goal. The third period saw Dawson Mercer (17th) tie the game at the 2:23 mark. LA retook the lead with 4:19 remaining in regulation only for Nico Hischier (24th) to force OT when he scored at 19:21. At 2:30 of sudden death, Mercer scored again (18th) to end the game. Winning goalie Vitek Vanecek saw just 22 shots for the game, stopping 19.
Samuel Ersson will get the start in goal for the Flyers tonight. The team will not have a morning skate. Lineups will be added to today's blog shortly before gametime.
