Quick Hits: Nov. 11, 2022

1. The Flyers lost to the Columbus Blue Jackets, 5-2, on Thursday night at Nationwide Arena. Philly made it two-thirds of the way back from a 3-0 deficit but were unable to find an equalizer. Columbus tacked on two late empty net goals. Turnovers proved very costly for the Flyers in the loss.

Goals by Johnny Gaudreau (6th of the season) and Zack Werenski (3rd), scored off Philadelphia giveaways, built a 2-0 lead in the first period for the Blue Jackets. Werenski assisted on Gaudreau's tally and "Johnny Hockey" returned the favor on Werenski's courtesy of a favorable bounce of the puck. Werenski left the game late in the first period and did not return.

Boone Jenner (3rd) opened a 3-0 lead for the Blue Jackets just 37 seconds into the second period. Tony DeAngelo (3rd) narrowed the gap to 3-1 with a rebound goal at 13:07.

Ivan Provorov drove the net and turned a Travis Konecny feed into a goal from the doorstep that cut the gap to 3-2 at 8:41 of the third period. Long-distance empty net goals by Nick Blankenburg (2nd) and Jenner (2nd of the game, 4th of the season) enabled the Blue Jackets to pull away late.
Carter Hart suffered his first regulation loss of the season. Hart stopped 24 of 27 shots. Joonas Korpisalo, in his second game back from hip surgery, earned the win with 32 saves on 34 shots.

Columbus played much of the game with only four defensemen. After losing Werenski in the first period, Erik Gudbranson exited in the second.

The Flyers did not receive a power play in this game. The Blue Jackets were 0-for-2.

2. With the Flyers one game into a stretch of three games in less than four nights, a scheduled Friday practice at the FTC in Voorhees was canceled. The Flyers will play back-to-back matinee home games against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday and Dallas Stars on Sunday. Both games are 1 p.m. starts.

3. Phantoms update: Ian Laperriere's club will host the Springfield Thunderbirds (5-4-2) at the PPL Center tonight before the Laval Rocket (2-6-3) pay a visit to Allentown on Saturday. Both games are slated to start at 7:05 p.m. ET. The games will be streamed live on AHL TV (subscription required).

4. Friday Forecheck: In this week's edition of the Friday Forecheck on PhiladelphiaFlyers.com, we take a look at the games against Ottawa, St. Louis and Columbus. Elsewhere, we discuss:

* Cam Atklnson skating with the team in Columbus on Thursday morning,
* The play of Lukas Sedlak's line, whether moving down from the second to third line helped alleviate some of the offensive pressure that Noah Cates had been putting on himself (side note: Cates now has three points over the last two games after posting just one point and five shots on goal through the first 11 games),
* John Tortorella's tough love approach with pretty much all of the 25-and-under players on the team except for the exceptionally mature Cates and the already established Joel Farabee.
* A Lehigh Valley Phantoms week-in-review.
* A Pelle Lindbergh memorial on the 37th anniversary of his passing.
