Quick Hits: July 8, 2024

1) The World Junior Summer Showcase will be held from July 26 to August 3 at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan. As usual, there will be two squads representing Team USA (USA Blue and USA White) and one apiece representing Canada, Sweden, and Finland.

The WJSS tournament serves as the first competitive evaluation tournament for hopefuls trying to earn roster spots for the IIHF Under-20 World Championship (World Junior Championships) come late December. Selection camps are in early December.

WJSS rosters for this year have not yet been finalized and announced. The 2024-24 World Junior Championships will be held in Ottawa from Dec. 26, 2024, through Jan. 5, 2025.

2) On this week's installment of Mondays with Meltzer on Flyers Daily, Jason Myrtetus and I discuss the just-completed Development Camp, 2024 draftees Jett Luchanko and Noah Powell, the status of goaltending prospect Alexei Kolosov, Bobby Brink and the current numbers game at wing, my long-term concern (short-time is no issue at all) about Garnet Hathaway -- who will be 35 years old at the conclusion of his new contract extension -- being able to sustain his current level of effectiveness for three more seasons, and many more topics. 3) Flyers and Flyers Alumni birthdays: Bobby Brink (2001), Karl Dykhuis (1971), Zack MacEwan (1996).

4) Today in Flyers history: On July 8, 1995, the Flyers traded defenseman Rob Zettler to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a 1996 fifth-round Draft pick (goaltender Per-Ragnar Bergqvist). Zettler spent one full and one half-season with the Flyers as a 6th/7th defenseman.
