1) Flyers Rookie Camp attendees had their off-ice meetings and orientation on Wednesday. Today, on-ice work begins at the Flyers Training Center in Voorhees. The session will run from 10:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. EDT. It is open the public and free to attend.
During Rookie Camp and the first week of NHL camp, Flyers players will be brought upstairs for post-practice interviews. Thereafter, locker room reopens after every practice and game per pre-pandemic standards.
On Friday, the Flyers Rookies will have a 10:30 a.m. morning skate in Voorhees before riding to Allentown for the 7:00 p.m. game at the PPL Center against the New York Rangers' rookies.
2) ICYMI: On PhiladelphiaFlyers.com, I wrote an article about Cam Atkinson's extensive commentary on team culture changes that he believes are needed from last season and has expressed a strong belief will happen under new head coach John Tortorella. Atkinson also vowed to do everything in his power to help make it happen on the ice and in the locker room along with the rest of the team. Time will tell if the Flyers can defy the very widespread predictions of the club finishing near the bottom of the standings but there is no questioning Atkinson's passion and determination. 3) Emil Andrae update: Flyers defense prospect Emil Andrae was released from the hospital today after being hit by a puck squarely in the face during HV71's preseason finale on Wednesday. The player, who was very heavily bleeding, needed assistance to exit the ice and taken to a nearby hospital for observation. Today, he is said to be feeling OK under the circumstances. He has been ruled out for the regular season opener on Saturday. It's possible that he could return, wearing extended facial protection, sometime next week.
4) Back in February, we blogged about
Scanlon Rec Center project in Kensington that Flyers Charities partnered with Snider Hockey and the City of Philadelphia to help see through to completion. The groundbreaking took place yesterday with Sean Couturier among those in attendance.
4) Today in Flyers History: Sept. 15, 1980
Andre "Moose" Dupont's Flyers career came to an end after eight seasons with the club. The Flyers sold his contract to the Quebec Nordiques on Sept. 15, 1980. In addition to cash, the Flyers received a 1981 seventh-round pick in the transition. As with Joe Watson and other players who had served the Flyers capably and loyally but no longer fit in the team's plans, legendary general manager Keith Allen made sure the player was taken care of before the parting became official.
The player was re-signed by the Flyers to a one-year contract, asked to choose a couple teams where he thought he could still be a regular starter and given an alternate option of staying on with the Flyers one additional year in a greatly reduced role as a depth player.
In 1978, Watson chose the Pittsburgh Penguins (then a weak-sister team) and the Colorado Rockies as destinations where he could remain a regular starter and provide leadership. Allen obliged by moving Watson's new one-year contract to Colorado. In Dupont's case in 1980, the fracophone Quebec native chose the Nordiques, who had been absorbed into the NHL one season earlier after the merger with the World Hockey Association.
