Quick Hits: August 19, 2022

1) With the dust settling after Team USA's shocking quarterfinal loss to Czechia at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship in Edmonton, the semifinal games will take place on Friday. In the 4 p.m. game, Canada will take on the Czechs. At 8:00 p.m., Sweden will play traditional archrival Finland. The winners of the semis will face off on Saturday for the gold medal while the losing teams will play each other for the bronze.

Flyers 2020 first-round pick Tyson Foerster has scored a goal in three straight games for Canada and has five points overall through five games. Teammate Elliot Desnoyers (0g, 1a) recorded his first point of the tournament in Wednesday's QF game against Switzerland. Desnoyers moved up from the fourth line to the third line last game after Ridly Greig went down with an injury but went back to the fourth line -- even in Greig's continued absence -- at Canada's practice on Thursday. After the tourney, Foerster and Desnoyers will join the Flyers or the AHL's Lehigh Valley Phantoms following training camp.

Team Sweden captain Emil Andrae is coming off a game in which he scored the game-winning goal for the Junior Crowns in a 2-1 victory against Latvia. Andrae enters the semifinal game ranked fifth among all players in scoring (4g, 4a, 8 points) and tops among defensemen. After the tourney, the Flyers' 2020 second-round pick will spend the 2022-23 season in the SHL with HV71 Jönköping before presumably coming to North America for the 2023-24 campaign.

Brian Zanetti (Switzerland) is the one Flyers-affiliated prospect who is now done at the tournament. Following the Flyers' upcoming Rookie Camp and NHL Camp, he will return to the Ontario Hockey League's Peterborough Petes for the 2022-23 season.

2) Flyers/Phantoms forward Jackson Cates is the guest on the Friday edition of Flyers Daily on the Flyers' Broadcast Network. In a 14-minute conversation with Jason Myrtetus, the older Cates brother discusses his new contract, his scary season-ending injury and summer rehab, being teammates in both college and pro hockey with brother Noah, and other subjects.

3) Flyers Alumni Fantasy Camp gets underway on Friday at the Class of 1923 Arena at the University of Pennsylvania. Look for a daily journal on FlyersAlumni.net, starting tomorrow.

4) Aug. 19: Happy 70th birthday wishes go out to Flyers Hall of Fame defenseman Jimmy Watson; a five-time NHL All-Star, 1976 Canada Cup participant and two-time Stanley Cup champion during his playing career with the Flyers.
