Recently signed by the Flyers to an entry-level contract, 25-year-old goaltending prospect expected to leave for the United States shortly to prepare for training camp and an opportunity to win an NHL roster spot. However, according to
multiple reports emanating from Russia, the player has been detained by authorities in St. Petersburg on the grounds of "draft dodging".
With Russia's war in Ukraine going poorly and the military suffering very heavy casualties, Vladimir Putin raised the conscription age to 40 late last month. Additionally, Fedotov until recently played for CSKA Moscow, which even today is officially under the authority of the Russian defense ministry.
The Flyers have not yet issued a formal confirmation or denial of the reports. The blog will be updated when more information becomes available.
If true, this story has potentially much broader implications across the National Hockey League including players eligible for the 2022 Entry Draft.
