Wrap: Devils Defeat Flyers in OT, 4-3
The Philadelphia Flyers overcame deficits of 2-0 and 3-1 to rescue a point from their game against the New Jersey Devils at the Wells Fargo Center before New Jersey prevailed in overtime, 4-3. Luke Hughes (3rd goal of the season) ended the game 28 seconds into overtime.
Alexander Holtz (7th), Jack Hughes (8th), and Tyler Toffoli (PPG, 12th) scored for the Devils in regulation. Morgan Frost (PPG, 3rd), Sean Walker (4th) and Tyson Foerster (6-on-4 PPG, 2nd) answered for the Flyers. Foerster's goal, a deflection of a Scott Laughton shot from center point, tied the game with 51 seconds remaining in regulation.
In an ultimately losing cause, Carter Hart was strong in net. He was downright stellar when the Flyers were on the penalty kill against New Jersey, which entered the game ranked number one on the power play. Overall, Hart stopped 31 of 35 shots. Winning goalie Akira Schmid was peppered with 48 shots on goal by the Flyers, stopping 45.
The Flyers went 2-for-6 on the power play. The Devils went 1-for-5 including an unsuccessful five-minute powerplay.
The five-minute power play for the Devils arose at 16:15 of the first period when Garnet Hathaway was assessed a boarding major and game misconduct for what was deemed "boarding" Luke Hughes. Not only did the younger Hughes brother -- who left the game but returned for the second period and ultimately scored the OT winner -- not actually hit violently into the boards, the whistle was late on the play. The hit, which was from the side, was a "mean" one, certainly, but not illegal or dirty.
The officials screwed up pretty much everything between when the whistle blew (as contact was already being made) to how the penalty was classified. It was officiating by result -- an apparent injury -- and not by what actually happened.
The Flyers played most of the game with just 10 forwards. Joel Farabee was benched for the rest of the night after two shifts (56 seconds of ice time). Flyers head coach John Tortorella said the benching was because Farabee "didn't listen".
