Flyers Beat Sharks in OT, 4-3
The Philadelphia Flyers claimed their first overtime win of the 2022-23 season as they skated to a 4-3 win in sudden-death against the San Jose Sharks at the SAP Center on Thursday. Trailing 3-1 in the third period, the Flyers pushed back and found a way to win.
Travis Konecny scored twice for the Flyers. Tony DeAngelo had a three-point night (1g, 2a) including the game-winner in overtime. On the San Jose side, Tomas Hertl (2g, 1a), Kevin Labanc (1g, 1a) and Erik Karlsson (0g, 2a) had multi-point performances.
Hertl (12th goal of the season) gave the Sharks a 1-0 edge off an Erik Karlsson feed at 9:38 of the first period. Konecny (16th) tied the game on a deflection goal off a DeAngelo shot at 10:25.
The lone goal of the second period belonged to San Jose. On the game's first power play, Hertl tallied his second goal of the night (13th of the season) to give the Sharks a 2-1 lead. In the opening minute of the third period, Karlsson and Hertl set up a transitional goal by Labanc that made it 3-1.
Owen Tippett (11th) narrowed the gap to 3-2 at 5:57 of the third period. At 17:55, the Flyers had some puck luck go their way as a Konecny shot (second goal of the game, 17th of the season) deflected into the net off San Jose's Mario Ferraro.
Samuel Ersson came up with multiple excellent saves, especially on the penalty kill, in earning the first win of his NHL career. Ersson stopped 25 of 28 shots overall. Kaapo Kahkonen was very strong for San Jose through the opening 40 minutes, but ended up taking the loss. Overall, he stopped 22 of 26 shots by the Flyers.
The Flyers went 0-for-1 on the power play. The Sharks were 1-for-3.
