The Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Florida Panthers, 2-1, at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise on Tuesday evening. The victory snapped a five-game losing streak for the Flyers (26-19-6) and ended a four-game winning streak for Florida (31-14-4).

The Flyers were heavily outplayed in the first period and were downright lucky to get the game to the first intermission with only a 1-0 deficit. Carter Verhaeghe (PPG, 25th) had the lone tally for Florida.

After getting forechecked into near oblivion by Florida in the first period -- both in the defensive zone and neutral zone -- the Flyers adjusted well. They used high flips and successful retrievals to neutralize Florida's very aggressive puck pressure. Philly outshot Florida by a 12-8 margin in the second period and 8-3 in the third.

Flyers goalie Sam Ersson stopped nine of 10 shots in the opening stanza. He also benefitted from 11 blocked shots in front of him. Over the rest of the game, Ersson saw only a combined 11 shots but several were tough saves. He finished with 20 saves on 21 shots. The team also blocked a total of 22 Florida shot attempts. Nick Seeler, the NHL's shot-blocking leader, accounted for six blocks.

Over the final 40 minutes, the Flyers received one goal apiece from Travis Konecny (23rd) and Noah Cates (2nd). Joel Farabee, who played a strong overall game, made a gorgeous backhand saucer pass on the Konecny goal. Sean Walker started it out with a long pass to Farabee. Cates' game-winning goal, scored at 2:36 of the third period, was unassisted.

The Flyers went 0-for-1 on the power play; a temporary momentum-killer after Philly came strong at the start of the second period. Philly was 1-for-2 on the penalty kill against Florida's scorching hot power play. A third period kill with Owen Tippett in the penalty box for boarding proved to be critical.
