Wrap: Flyers Down Devils in Opener, 5-2
The Philadelphia Flyers skated to a workmanlike 5-2 home victory over the New Jersey Devils on opening night of the 2022-23 season. John Tortorella earned a win in his Flyers coaching debut.
Two goals apiece by Travis Konecny (5-on-5, power play) and Morgan Frost (5-on-5, empty net) paced the offense, while Wade Allison notched Philadelphia's first goal of the new season. Carter Hart stopped 34 of shots. In their debut game as a defense pairing, Ivan Provorov (10 blocked shots, five hits) and Tony DeAngelo (three blocks) chipped in two assists apiece. while Kevin Hayes also had a pair of helpers.
Alexander Holtz (power play) and defenseman Damon Severson scored in a losing cause for New Jersey. Mackenzie Blackwood had 20 saves on 24 shots.
