The Philadelphia Flyers shut out the Vancouver Canucks, 2-0, in the 2023-24 home opener at the Wells Fargo Center on Tuesday night. Egor Zamula and Sean Couturier (penalty shot) scored first period goals.
Zamula (1st NHL goal) opened the scoring at 1:45 on an excellent wrist shot from the point that found the net. The assists went to Travis Konecny and Scott Laughton. On the goal, Zamula waited until Conor Garland slid past the net and then unleashed his shot.
Couturier (1st goal of the season) made it 2-0 when he was awarded a penalty shot at 17:23 after being fouled on a partial breakaway. Moving into the attack zone, Couturier actually turned his back on the net briefly while continuing to move the puck forward. He then whirled around and fired the puck home.
The second period was dominated by the Flyers from start to finish. They were unable, however, to extend their lead.
At 3:34 of the third period, the Canucks put the puck on the net on a pinballing shot originally fired by Carson Soucy. There was contact at the net and the Flyers successfully challenged the play for goaltender interference. The Flyers preserved the lead the rest of the way.
Carter Hart earned his sixth career shutout, stopping all 25 shots fired on his net. Thatcher Demko played extremely well in a losing cause, denying 40 of 42 shots.
Couturier dressed for Tuesday's game after missing practice on Monday. With both Tyson Foerster and Bobby Brink dressing for the home opener and Scott Laughton being moved from left wing to center, Tortorella scratched Morgan Frost.
