Flyers Surge Past Florida, 6-3
The Philadelphia Flyers came into Tuesday night's game at the Wells Fargo Center expecting the Florida Panthers to throw a lot of rubber at the net. The pre-scout on Florida, for several seasons, has been that they attempt a lot of shots and will put the puck at the net from a variety of angles. Florida is not a shutdown defensive team but they can overwhelm opponents once they get their attack cranking.
As it turned out, the Flyers defeated Florida, 6-3. An outstanding goaltending performance by Carter Hart, and an offensive game from the defense corps joining the attack and pockets of tenacious forechecking in the second period keyed the win.
The Flyers (26-32-12) are 2-1-1 through the first four games of their current seven-game homestand. The Minnesota Wild (41-22-8) are up next on Thursday.
A first period deflection goal by Matthew Tkachuk (34th of the season) at 1:15 was answered by a Joel Farabee redirect (12th) off his hip at 4:43. Farabee has scored in three straight games after going 26 games without a goal.
The Flyers outscored Florida by a 4-1 margin in the middle stanza. After Travis Sanheim (6th) pinched in and scored at 8:42 to give Philly a 2-1 lead, Florida defensemen Brandon Montour (13th) scored from the right circle at 14:17. The Flyers then exploded for three unanswered goals in quick fashion as Scott Laughton (16th) made it 3-2 at 16:54, Sanheim scored again (second of the game, 7th of the season) at 18:05 and then Ivan Provorov (5th) jumped into the play and scored at 18:55 to open a three-goal lead.
In the third period, Sam Reinhart (27th) scored on the final tick of a 6-on-4 power play with the goalie pulled at 13:49. A Tyson Foerster blocked shot led to a Morgan Frost empty net goal (14th) at 17:59.
Hart stopped 41 of 44 shots to earn the victory. He was especially good in the first and third periods. Former Flyers and Phantoms goalie Alex Lyon absorbed the loss with 18 saves on 23 shots.
Ten different Flyers players got their names on the scoresheet on Tuesday, Philly received multi-point games from Sanheim (2g), Farabee (1g, 1a), Frost (1g, 1a, back-to-back multi-point games for the first time in his NHL career), Tyson Foerster (2a), Noah Cates (2a), and Egor Zamula (2a). Provorov (1g), Laughton (1g), Brendan Lemieux (1a, 17 PIM), and Tony DeAngelo (1a) chipped in one point apiece as 10 different Philly players got on the scoresheet.
The Flyers went 0-for-2 on the power play. The Panthers were 1-for-4.
