Despite a couple laughs that were likely had when Jay Feaster proclaimed that Mark Jankowski could be the best player long term from this draft
(Not saying he is, or isn't, but I'm aware that many fans of other teams probably snickered a bit), Calgary had a draft full of good value, taking 2nd and 3rd round talents late into Day Two. With a team not getting any younger, Calgary really needed to up the ante, and swing for the fences was Feaster's motto early on.
21st Overall - Mark Jankowski
A very raw player, Jankowski comes into the organization having to take a sharp learning curve to the NHL. He'll head to the USHL next season, as he played high school prep hockey this past season. A lanky but tall frame, Jankowski is a skilled players who thinks the game a step or two before most. He anticipates plays well and utilizes soft passing to set up his teammates. He's a gifted skater who will get better as he gets stronger, and can dangle around defenders. He works hard on the PK and was a leader for his team this season. Despite that, there are questions about his ability to translate this all quickly to the NHL over the next few years, having played at a lower level. He also shows some habits of not wanting to play in the dirtier areas of a game.
42nd Overall - Patrick Sieloff
Sieloff is as tough as they come, exploding into brutal open ice hits. Despite only being six-feet-tall, Patrick is a feared player. He's a good skater who keeps up with the play, and can transition games with short quick passes. He is a positionally sound defender who takes care of the wall and the space in front of his net. He can shoot a puck pretty well, but he'll never be known for an offensive game.
75th Overall - Jon Gillies
Big. That's how to describe this puck-blocker, as he takes away a lot of the net with his six-foot-five, 220 lb frame. Not quick post-to-post, he makes up for it with sound positioning in net. He's not good at handling the puck, and won't leave his net much. Despite this, he's calm and collected, rarely showing much panic.
105th Overall - Brett Kulak
Not big, or small, Kulak is a good two-way player on the back end. Keeping his head up, Kulak transitions a play well and sneaks around the ice. He's got a hard shot and gets in on net well, and can make good passes, while not overly flashy. Defensively he does things right, using some strength and reach to win battles for pucks. Not the type to ever win a Norris, Kulak is the type who can just play the game.
124th Overall - Ryan Culkin
A likely bottom pairing defender one day, Culkin shows good IQ on the ice, at both ends. Culkin can skate fairly well and will carry the puck, but is at his best when simple and starting the play with quick passes. He keeps the play in front of himself and uses his active stick well to deflect pucks and defend in his own zone. He's not flashy at anything, and isn't very physical, but he does little things on the ice to impress a coach.
165th overall - Coda Gordon
A strong forward, Coda is an interesting player to watch. He's not overly physical but uses his strength and reach well to play off the boards in the offensive zone. He makes his living in front of the net and shows goal-scoring instincts with the puck around that area. He does well at getting open and creating an option, rather than control the puck himself. He can get lazy defensively, at times, but is good positionally and will do what he can to help the team. Some want to see him play more assertive with some anger.
