After a heartbreaking and disappointing defeat in the first round, Vancouver will be looking to regroup next year, and tweak their lineup with has a solid core of players for the next couple of years to take a couple runs. Vigneault is back, so we'll continue to see zone starts and match ups used.
"With the twenty-sixth pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Vancouver is proud to select from the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League:
Scott Laughton."
After being selected Third Overall in the OHL Draft by Oshawa, there have been big expectations for this General. While he hasn't developed into that high end offensive player that was expected, there's certainly some pedigree to his name along with the best compete I've seen this past season. On a personal note, Scott Laughton is the kind of player you win with. He gives you an honest effort every single shift. He's my type of player.
Laughton projects as a Top Nine two-way forward. His offensive game will never ever wow you, but he makes smart and calculated decisions with the puck on his stick, and really shows a lot of confidence in his abilities, with the intelligence and vision to make things happen.
On his feet, Laughton is a horse. He's hard to knock off stride, and can generate very good speed with his balance and power. Down low he's a demon to handle as he forechecks hard and gets into the dirty areas of the ice.
What makes Laughton so valuable is an extremely good two-way game. He shows the gritty in-your-face, never-back-down, go-through-the-boards-to-win,
every cliche in the book mentality to win. He gets into positions well and wins little battles along the boards every single shift. He's a competitive player with an insane amount of energy and work ethic.
While you may never a top end offensive center out of Laughton, the team that calls his name on June 22nd will be getting a strong two-way honest center to play in the 2 or 3 slot. This kid is a real winner in my book.
