The Patrik Laine trade is official. The Montreal Canadiens have acquired the Finnish sniper from the Columbus Blue Jackets in return for Jordan Harris. The Habs also received a 2026 second-round pick.

What are YOUR thoughts? In light of the fact that everyone knew Columbus had to trade Laine, was Harris the most realistic return or could they have done better if they continued to wait?

The Edmonton Oilers have acquired right winger Vasily Podkolzin from the Vancouver Canucks for a 2025 fourth-round pick. Hours later, the Oilers dealt defenseman Cody Ceci and a 2025 third-round pick to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for young defenseman Ty Emberson.

More interesting than these moves in their own right is how much effect, if any, this will have on the Oilers' impending decisions on whether to match the St. Louis Blues' offer sheets to defenseman Philip Broberg and forward Dylan Holloway. The Oilers, in need of salary cap space, have until Tuesday to match or allow the players to walk.

By all appearances, the Oilers appear ready to decline to match the offer sheets, and take the requisite draft pick compensation. It was almost a foregone conclusion that they'd let Broberg go. It was less clear with Holloway until the Podkolzin acquisition.

More to come....
