Six teams that should try to sign UFA Claude Giroux this summer |

The Florida Panthers’ salary cap situation will make it challenging to re-sign Claude. It’s not impossible. But here are six other teams that should take a run at signing the UFA when the NHL free agent signing period starts:
1. Boston Bruins: If Patrice Bergeron decides to retire, the Bruins should go after Giroux. If the Bruins also persuade David Krecji to return from Czechia, the Bruins’ offense should be improved.
2. Los Angeles Kings: They want more skill up front to compete with the Edmonton Oilers. They have plenty of kids, but need more seasoned talent. They made the playoffs this season. With a healthy Drew Doughty, they would like to make a longer postseason run next season.
3. New York Rangers: Lots of speculation about Andrew Copp re-signing with the Rangers. If that happens, there would be no room for Giroux. But if that rumor is incorrect, Giroux would fit well with this offense. The question would be whether Giroux would be comfortable playing for a team that has been an intense rival for years.
4. Ottawa Senators: Don’t see this happening. But there are people around hockey that believe that the Senators will make a bid. It certainly makes sense, The Senators want to be more competitive. He could help ignite their offense. They don’t have salary cap issues that restrain other teams. But they won’t be a contender, even if Giroux comes there. That’s not what Giroux will want in the twilight of his career.
5. Washington Capitals: With Nicklas Backstrom’s career in jeopardy because of his chronic hip injury, the Capitals may need to consider a replacement. Why not take a stab at signing Giroux. He seems to want to stay in the Eastern Conference. The team is still strong enough, particularly if the Capitals acquire a goalie this summer.
6. New Jersey Devils: The Devils are willing to trade the No. 2 draft pick to expedite their improvement. Why not keep the pick and woo Giroux. He can play wing or center. The team has plenty of cap space. Why not make the effort.
