RFA Summer Questions: Double Trouble For Detroit?

The only remaining drama to be had over the next four-plus weeks before clubs assemble for training camp are a number of young restricted free agents who did not have arbitration rights and are looking for new deals.

We will look at a number of them over the next few days, and the next on the list are a pair of RFA’s from Detroit, defenseman Moritz Seider and winger Lucas Raymond. The big German blueliner is one of the best young two-way defenders in the NHL, with three seasons of 50, 42, and 42 points, while Raymond bounced back from a slight dip in his sophomore season with a career-high 31 goals and 72 points.

GM Steve Yzerman spent most of the summer plugging holes created by the departure of free agents Shayne Gostisbehere, David Perron, and Daniel Sprong, and trading Robby Fabbri and Jake Walman, holding back nearly $18 million in cap space to get his two young stars locked up long-term, but knowing Yzerman’s MO, he will likely wait till the last minute to get the most favorable deal possible as he did with team captain Dylan Larkin.

There has been some chatter that the Wings hope to get both players signed at the same time to take care of all of their business in one motion, but we shall see if that comes to pass.
