The Calgary Flames are getting all kinds of scoring, and they are playing better hockey than we have seen from them in many years. For many years this was a team whose success or failure rested on the shoulders of Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan. They have been among the team's top two scoring forwards for about as long as anyone can remember...
Until now.
This season the youth is taking over and Gaudreau finds himself tied for 4th in goal scoring with 4 goals, while Monahan is tied for 9th with 2. The trio of Mangiapane (10 goals) Lindholm (8) and Tkachuk (7) are clearly the future of this team.
It also appears Monohan is one of the few players who just isn't working in Sutter's system right now either. Over the last three seasons Monahan's TOI has dropped from 19:07 to 18:08 to 17:41...and this season, under Sutter, Sean's minutes have fallen to 14:59 per game. He is obviously not trending the right way.
But Monohan is a Center. and only has one more year (after this season) on his contract at 6.375/
There is no question that Monahan, as a center, still has value.
sources have confirmed to me that four teams: Buffalo (e3), Nashville (e2), and the NY Islanders (e3) and the Devils (e4) are all poking around regarding Monahan.
