This kind of shocked me today and my blog is up late because I wanted to do some more research on it…
One source told me today very early this morning that he heard the Carolina hurricanes are working hard on an extension for Rantanen, but It’s not an easy process. If this was an easy negotiation, Colorado would’ve kept him. Sakic went down the extension path earlier this year and decided to cut bait. Many thought it was just about money in Colorado, but calling around this afternoon, so some players, I know close to the situation there is also a belief that Mikko, in his head, already has a team he wants to play for the next seven years.….and the speculation is that team is not Colorado and it’s not Carolina
The Hurricanes believed that Sebastian Aho would be able to convince Ratanen to sign an extension. It could still play out that way, but I’m told the hurricanes are working hard on a a Plan B. If no extension by the trade deadline, they will try andtrade Mikko out west to either the Kings or the Canucks or Stars, those three teams are from sources….
As far as some pure speculation on my part, I wouldn’t be surprised if Vegas got involved if Brad Marchand is not available or they just can’t make a deal with Boston….
But here’s a thing unlike JT Miller, who everybody knew wanted to play in New York, no one is talking about what that one team is that Rantanen wants to play for next year. Very different quiet guy compared to JT…. So any team that he does want to play for next year would definitely have the advantage in getting him if they had the space or ways to do it…. Because then they could trade for them and sign him to an eight year deal.
And this is all been complicated by the fact Mikko only has two points and six games with Carolina….. and that Martin Necas has been really good in Colorado….
