Goalie Jeremy Swayman’s contract situation is starting to look as if it will not be an easy negotiation for the Boston Bruins. Swayman spoke on a local Boston webcast on Tuesday and indicated that he is not only negotiating for himself and his family, but for other goaltenders down the road.
“The answer I’m gonna give you this year is that I’ve educated myself, and I understand the business side of it all. It’s given me a complete new mindset of understanding the business and how to react to it. I understand the cap is going up and where it will be in years. I understand my comparables and how I can’t ruin the goalie market for guys that are gonna be in my shoes down the line. I went to the School of Business for the University of Maine, and I love the business side of it all.”
Gone are the days when homegrown players take a discount to stay in Boston. David Pastrnak and Charlie McAvoy got market value on their extensions and it sounds like Swayman is going to hold GM Don Sweeney’s feet to the fire.
The Bruins have painted themselves into a corner, with the trade of Linus Ullmark to Ottawa. If a holdout goes into the season, Boston will have to go with Joonas Korpisalo and Brandon Bussi between the pipes.
