Update: John Klingberg to the Oilers appears done….

New York Islanders Center, Brock Nelson, could become the major domino in the trade deadline, which is now just 49 days away.

On any other team in the NHL, I would say, pending a UFA of Nelson’s stature would be absolutely moved for a first-round draft pick and possibly more on March 7th. However, this is a Lou Lamoriello team and one characteristic of the GMs’ teams, stretching all the way back to New Jersey, is a core group of players who are very close with Lamoriello, holding special meetings with him, and in general, these players have been considered to be almost untouchable.

Brock Nelson is one of the definite highlights on this Islanders team . His stats over the last several years have been consistent…even when the team hasn’t been. He is due a raise for sure and seems pretty happy in New York….

However, he could always go to a contender, get the Islanders the first-round draft pick or a prospect, and then return to the Islanders on July 1. Still, for as much as you think that scenario makes sense, it’s amazing how rarely it occurs. There is something about leaving a team and putting on another jersey that does change a player. However, the relationship between Lou and his core is incredibly unique. For example, you know if Brock Nelson is an Islander after the trade deadline, he’s going to be an Islander next year…..and you aren’t gonna lose him for nothing.

We’ve seen Anders Lee re-signed, for example, when many thought that the team needed to move younger… Lee is also in that core group and at one time was also in the core group with Lou in New Jersey.

My question for you is this:

Does your team need Brock Nelson for the playoff run, and what would you be willing to give up?
And Islanders fans, are you OK re-signing him ?
