The Next Great NHL Coach: David Carle |

|
David Carle, head coach of the University of Denver hockey program, is going for his third national championship in four years. Last night, Denver beat BC to advance to the final four again. BC is a team loaded for bear. There will be several players from that team playing in the NHL by the end of the week. Yet,,,Denver beat them again as they beat them last year in the final.
David Carle took the US world juniors team to gold in a tournament they were clearly the best coached of all the countries, including Canada.
There are a few people I met that are smarter in hockey than David Carle is. The last time I wrote an article like this was seven years ago now, and it was titled The Next Great NHL GM: Bill Zito. At that point, Zito was still the assistant GM in Columbus, but talking to him, you just knew there was something different. And that’s the way it is with David Carle too.
In last night’s game against Boston College, it was clear that the adjustments made between the first and second period launched Denver to victory. BC, with all their talent, was playing an overly aggressive game.
Carle picked up on this and even said on the air in a bench interview that Denver was going to let BC overpursue and be caught off position where Denver would play smart in straight lines.
This was a quick-hit interview, but what he said was way deeper than his words, which you want from a coach. A simple plan that can appear complex to your opponent.
And the craziest thing: David Carle is only 35 years old. Next season, he could be the biggest factor in a new coach since Jon Cooper.
