This deal is per Kevin Weekes, although Elliot Freedman says there may be a glitch.
But if the deal happens, and is in fact true, and just 1 for 1, Rutherford, one of the league's oldest and best GMs, must believe a HELL of a lot in Mike Matheson to take on what is a truly terrible contract for the next several years. Matheson is owed nearly 30M over the next 6 years and since signing this huge deal he has really been suspect in his own zone.
Meanwhile, Bill Zito, one of the NHL's newest GMs not only moved a lot of stagnant money out but got Patric Hornqvist, who while older, still puts up nice numbers and adds so much character to a Panthers team sort of known for lacking character.... Hornqvist is signed for a slightly higher AAV, but is only signed for three more years.
Very interesting deal.
Both the Penguins and Panthers have other deals they are working on as well so this could be just the tip of the iceberg.
