Tony DeAngelo is a talented player...for sure. He is also controversial in his views and opinions on twitter, but that's not important for this discussion. Everyone is free to express their opinions...So this question is about his game on the ice... and that is a pretty big question right now.
DeAngelo, a fellow south jersey native, is a pending RFA and has the talent and numbers to be asking for the big money he will be asking for. DeAngelo put up an impressive 53 points in 68 games and was the Rangers' most effective power-play weapon... He has always commanded a presence and his 19 PP assists was among the best in the NHL for D-men.
However, he had a terrible, and I mean terrible three games in the qualifiers. 1 assist only and a BIG minus 6. He also took 16 minutes in PIM and the Penalty he took at the end of Game 1 was crushing to the Rangers. He then returned to the ice for the final minute and made three mistakes. His lack of desperation in his play was also puzzling.
He had been questionable for the series with an injury, leading me to wonder if he was playing hurt and compensating in all the wrong ways. He is still young and a lot of pressure was on this kid...as was the case with many Rangers players...
So is it unfair to judge him on these games? He is not shy about his confidence and he is a player...but how much is worth? Really.
