When the Cup champs lost Montour and Ekman-Larsson to free agency summer there was some concern about the power-play point man and defensive depth/skill. The reality was Florida couldn’t hold onto either of those players and continue to be a dominant team….. Suddenly… just when things start to matter this season, the Panthers pick up a serious upgrade in Seth Jones with Chicago retaining 25% of the remaining salary. Need filled.

Who else should this matter to?

Everyone else with Cup hopes in the Eastern Conference.

The Leafs had some interest in Jones, but now they have to look at their roster and see who else they may want…Tampa wants a center. The Caps want to upgrade both on defense and offense….The Devils want to add scoring…

A trade like the Jones to the defending champs turns those “wants” to “needs.”

On Reilly Smith held out.
The Rangers are holding out Reilly Smith for potential trade reasons…Are the Rangers suddenly sellers…..I am told they are buyers and sellers…so there is more coming…
