Zdeno Chara is old....BUT he could probably lift a car off of a small child. Chara's regimen is instagram epic and his leadership is second to none...remember the guy playing with a broken jaw in the Cup Final two years ago? He brings so much to the room that it is insane to think he may soon be leaving Boston.
Oddly enough, I saw Chara's very first pre-season game in September of 1997..as an Islander in wait for it...the Spectrum. The Isles were playing against the Flyers in a pre-season game that was played in the Spectrum (which no longer exists) because the Core States Center...(Now the Wells Fargo Center) had some other event... That is how long Chara has been playing.
I remember sneaking down to a seat right on the glass. I saw the whites of Chara's eyes. What do you remember from a preseason game 23 years ago? I remember Chara. And to be honest, I remember him because he was absolutely TERRIBLE. He was tall, lanky and really REALLY not ready for prime time. A newborn Giraffe. NEVER in a million years would I have believed it if you told me the career that he would have.
That was 23 years ago. He almost twice that age now. He has lifted a Cup, and Boston loves him.
The Bruins have cap space, and the assumption was always that he would play in Boston or nowhere...That was until someone asked Z. He is not done playing. If the Bruins want to go another direction, so will he..
I heard this around UFA Day and still wasn't really buying it. But then I heard a few teams had talked to him and were serious about bringing him in. The Flyers talked to him. The Islanders talked to him...(ironic remembering back to the Spectrum). The Maple Leafs and Canucks have also talked to him. He makes sense on all 4 teams, and back with Boston..
I get the sense that Boston will make one more pitch here. One source feeling the Bruins have scheduled a time to meet with him in the next day or so...
