Phil Housley’s players are buying what he is selling.

The Sabres took fuve massive power strides forward in their season opening 3-2 shootout loss to the Montreal Canadiens.

Housley’s congregation played fast, physical, and fierce for 65 minutes.

The capacity crowd were thoroughly entertained by Housley’s high octane brand of hockey.

From Day 1, Reverend Housley has been preaching the hockey gospel from high atop his pulpit. The coach is selling a “shots from all angles” sermon by all players since he was hired in June.

His congregation is taking the words to heart.

Patron saint of Buffalo Jason Pominville potted two beauties and forced the hometown fans to their feet.

The Sabres played their new aggressive style that Housley brought with him from Smashville.

Housley has been preaching an aggressive shot mentality. Carey Price was blasted by 45 shots in 64 shot attempts. Sabres sniper Evander Kane had 11 shots on goal.

“We outshot a team, we outchanced a team,” Housley said. “We just didn’t beat them on the scoreboard. We liked the effort of our guys. Things were coming together. We took a step forward tonight.”

Housley has the undivided attention of his team. They believe in him. He believes in them.

“We’ve taken strides,” Pominville said. “Every day in practice (Housley demands ) high pace, high tempo, wants us skating, wants us active, wants the D active. I think it’s a fun style to play for the players. It’s going to be a fun style for the fans to watch.”
