Quick Hits: Devils vs Stars
Good starts without scoring
The Devils really need to start getting early leads. Too often this year they have come out of the gate flying, but unable to score.
Jake Allen
Now with just three wins in his last 13 starts, Allen needs to find a way to get the job done. Although he’s played well at times and made some spectacular stops, the consistency in his 60 minute game just isn’t there. Whether it be poor rebound control, or untimely goals against, the Devils struggle to get in a groove when they’re constantly trailing in games. Yes, not all of the goals are his fault, but good goalies make the stops when they’re needed. Some might think this is harsh, but the net should be anyone’s but his going forward.
Momentum
This team simply cannot gain any momentum. They came out buzzing last night only to surrender two goals in a two minute span, sucking the life out of the sold out Prudential Center. Halfway through the third, a Jack Hughes’ goal would awaken the crowd making it 2-1. In just 35 seconds they gave it right back, when Duchene made it 3-1 Dallas. Whether it’s play by play, shift by shift, goal by goal, or game by game, this team needs to figure out ways to string positive momentum. Taking steps backward immediately after taking steps forward has become the norm, and that’s only okay for losing hockey.
Depth Scoring
Another game with zero production from the bottom six forwards. This is something Tom Fitzgerald must address before it’s too late.
Nashville Next
The good news is the Devils have an opportunity to get right back at it today in Nashville. The bad news is they’ve been terrible in the second half of back to backs the past few seasons. As a matter of fact, the Devils haven’t won the second half of a back to back since game two of the season, with a 1-4 record this year.
