Lifeless Devils Limping Into Postseason

In a game that was about as uneventful as the first seven episodes of this past season of HBO’s White Lotus, the Devils fell 1-0 to the Islanders at the Rock on Sunday afternoon. Jersey went through the motions for the entire 60 minutes, showing just a few glimpses of life throughout. With the latest snooze fest that is now an uninspiring, three straight losses against non playoff teams for the complacent Devils.

In case you missed it, here’s the whole game in a few words. Paul Cotter took a five minute major for a shoulder to the head of Adam Pelech and will most likely be suspended. Devils killed the entire penalty. Timo Meier made a poor decision, turning the puck over to Bo Horvat for the game’s only goal. Jacob Markstrom and Luke Hughes looked good and that’s it…

With just two games remaining before their playoff matchup with Carolina, New Jersey needs to wake up fast or the Devils will be quickly swept away in the Hurricane winds.
While we spoke last about the conservative measures that need to be taken in order to rest, recharge and maintain a healthy or at least healthy-ish status, dropping three straight games to bottom feeders is not exactly a way to build confidence and feel good about your game heading into the playoffs.

There are only two options going forward in the final two contests, ramp up now and play these last two as if the post season has already begun or commit completely to the meaninglessness of these last two, rest as many top guys as you can and let the depth handle the load. If you’re Sheldon Keefe, what do you do?
