In this edition of the hotstove, we share our choices for best player on the Philadelphia Flyers.

Sean Couturier.
There were some concerns about a potential lack of offensive upside earlier in his career but those have long been erased. He has developed into a force at both ends of the rink.
Couturier has amassed as many 5v5 points as Jack Eichel – and more than Elias Pettersson, Mathew Barzal, Sebastian Aho, and Tyler Seguin, to name a few – over the last couple of seasons. Clearly, he’s an impact player offensively.
There’s no question that’s the case in his own zone as well. Despite being hard-matched against opposing team’s top players on a nightly basis, the Flyers have given up shots, chances, and expected goals at a lesser rate with Couturier on the ice. He smothers top-end players on the regular.
If Couturier were a little more efficient on the power play he’d more or less be the perfect center.

Long known as primarily a defensive forward, Sean Couturier busted out over the previous two seasons with back-to-back 30+ goal 70+ point seasons, which he was more or less on pace to match this season.
The Flyers scored just an absolutely ridiculous 62% of the total goals scored while Couturier was on the ice. Anyone posting such a total would need to get a bit lucky, but Couturier did post a fantastic 55% expected goals percentage.
Few players in the NHL have a bigger impact on the total game that Couturier. His 39 5v5 points are just outside the top 20, and more than Ovechkin, Eichel or Aho. He plays better defense than just about anyone who outscored him. He has a bigger impact on games than Nathan MacKinnon does. Couturier is arguably one of the ten best players in the entire NHL. He is obviously the Flyers best player.
