In this edition of the hotstove, we share our picks for the Hart Trophy in 2019-20.

I have no doubt Connor McDavid will have the most spectacular season. He *should* win the Hart Trophy. I don't see Edmonton making the playoffs, though, and voters always seem hesitant to hand out the award to someone whose team comes up short.

As such, I'm going to go off the board a little bit and say Auston Matthews. I expect him to dominate alongside William Nylander in the latter's revenge tour. The power play should be fantastic and help boost Matthews' totals, as should having a full season with a more mobile, offensively-inclined defense core featuring the likes of Morgan Rielly, Tyson Barrie, Jake Muzzin, and Travis Dermott.

If Matthews stays healthy, he should contend for the Rocket Richard – he is my pick – and there's no doubt the Toronto Maple Leafs will be one of the better teams in the league. That'll put him firmly in the conversation.

James Tanner

I think the Hart Trophy will be won by Sidney Crosby. Last year Crosby had 3 less 5v5 points than McDavid in 100 less minutes, while being arguably the league's best defensive forward. It seems we may have prematurely given the best player on earth title to McDavid. Only Kucherov had a higher p/60. Overall Crosby had 100 points and probably should have won the Hart. Since he was passed over last year, if he's even a plausible candidate this year, he should get the late career romance vote, but odds are he won't even need it. Crosby is the best player in the NHL, still.

Michael Stuart

Connor McDavid.

Either he singlehandedly leads the Oilers to the playoffs, making the ridiculous "he didn't make the playoffs" argument a moot point, or the Oilers crash and burn again, resulting in the voters feeling *so* bad for him that the give him the Hart he deserves anyways. He's the best player in the league, and has probably deserved the trophy in each season since he made his debut.

This shouldn't be hard.
