The NHL released the season schedule for the 2020-21 season on Wednesday. While league play begins January 13, the Rangers open the year facing the Isles, who they also match up against in Game 2 of the campaign, on January 14. New York concludes the season May 8 against the Capitals. As of now no times have been given for each game.
New York will face each of their division rivals eight times. The East Division is comprised of the Bruins, Sabres, Devils, Isles, Flyers, Penguins and Capitals in addition to the Blueshirts. The top-four teams will advance to the playoffs with the winner of the divisional playoffs advancing to the Cup Semifinals.
The Blueshirts play eight games in January, 13 in February, 15 each in March and April and five in May. New York has six back-to-backs, the first coming February 20 and 21, both versus the Capitals. In addition, as per the press release, "the Blueshirts will play four consecutive team games against New Jersey from Apr. 13 to Apr. 18 (Apr. 13 at New Jersey, Apr. 15 at MSG, Apr. 17 at MSG, Apr. 18 at New Jersey), which will be the most consecutive team games against one opponent in franchise history."
Welcome back to the 70s and 80s, when each division game was a war. No more easy games, as regardless of the opponent, divisional rivalries will be at gand. We will need to see how the rivalry against Boston or Buffalo compared to the other five teams, who were in the Metro pans out, but I assume it will not take long for the hatred to build. Plus if we think the season will have bad blood, just wait until the playoffs or down the stretch.
