Rangers sign Tony DeAngelo and Alexandar Georgiev to two-year deals

The Rangers, after inking Alexandar Georgiev to a two-year deal with a $2.425 AAV, signed Tony DeAngelo to a two-year contract with a $4.8 mil AAV. The deal is a major raise off the $925K he earned last season, but well below the $5.5 mil or so that many thought he might get in arbitration, With both players signed, GM Jeff Gorton has Ryan Strome, C (Nov. 5 hearing date) and Brendan Lemieux, LW (Nov. 6) as remaining restricted free agents to be inked.





A look at the Rangers' salary structure following the signing of ADA and Georgiev. Please note this does not take into account performance bonuses, which add about $10 mil or so to the overall figure. But with both players signed, New York has about $7 million or so to ink both Strome and Lemiuex.







By signing a two-year deal. ADA will be an RFA for one more year after this deal ends (and hat tip to aecliptic who called the dollar amount almost perfectly in my last blog). This contract allows DeAngelo to try and cash in when New York has additional cap space and the cap has risen by a million dollars. Both sides benefit from the deal, as ADA gets a nice raise while the Rangers keep him under $5 million, have cost certainty for the next two years and one more year of control before he hits free agency. This might allow New York to deal ADA, though if that happens, my guesstimate is that it won't be this season. Because ADA will make $5.3 mil in year, under the new CBA rules which says the qualifying offer will be the lower of 120% of the AAV or the final year salary, DeAngelo’s qualifying offer in 2022 will be $5.3MM.



Offensively, the below evidences just how good DeAngelo was defensively. He needs to be better in his own zone, which is his main area of growth. ADA is solid in zone exits, but struggles in 1:! defending, though he made some strides last season, In addition, he has to temper his aggressiveness to avoid silly penalties. Coming into the season, the question is will he switch to his offside and skate next to Jacob Trouba or remain on the right side of the third pairing? My hope is that he gets a shot at the top pairing, as ADA did say earlier this week he is open to making that switch and has played on the left side in the past.







Earlier in the day, Georgiev signed his deal. Look for him to split time with Igor Shesterkin, likely in a 60-40 or so split. Georgiev went from undrafted free agent to a key part of the Rangers' goalie duo. His raise comprises about $1.5 million or so of the $3 million saved from Henrik Lundqvist buyout, making the contract a solid one and in the range I had expected. In addition, signed to a two-year deal, that means Georgiev will be the one protected in the expansion draft with Keith Kinkaid exposed, since Igor does not need to be protected.
