Former Red Wing Andreas Athanasiou made it through waivers and finds himself back in the AHL. At 4.25m the former Wing doesn’t seem to be playing at a level that Chicago expects. Detroit picks like Cholowski, Mantha (gone for the year now on injury), Svechnikov (back overseas), Zadina (overseas) just haven’t moved the needle. Many of you point to the current offices lack of success outside of the first round which came ironically off of a lack of success within the first round by the previous regime. Larkin is an obvious exception, but even the players still with the team (Rasmussen and Veleno) that were first round picks just haven’t lived up to the hope or the hype. Ras is, at times, a solid bottom six defensive forward but not what you hope for in a first round pick.

There will be a pre-game breakdown tomorrow, but Detroit faces off against Pittsburgh again. The first meeting was a 6-3 beating and one Detroit would like to put in the rear view. Detroit has 13 points (6-7-1) in 14 games and Pittsburgh has 14 points (6-9-2) in 17 games. While Detroit is looking to make a step forward, Pittsburgh will continue to monitor and see if they can “reload vs. rebuild” or if some significant deals may end up on the table to start a new era.

Detroit’s blue line issues have been addressed at length, and near the halfway point of November IF the team wants to try and improve during the season the league is getting closer to the point where teams may be ready to deal. The question is, what does Detroit have that they are willing to part with and other teams want?

First round picks should still, at this point, be off the table. From there, chime in on any players or pieces you’d be willing to move that could bring a boost to the team. Raymond and Seider just inked new deals and Larkin still seems to be the “engine” of this team. Edvinsson is probably off the table, but is Debrincat? Do other teams see Berggren as underperforming his value? As always, it’s all of you that make this go and for that I’m truly grateful. Let me know your thoughts and we’ll see if management makes a move.
