Update: Jacob Truscott has signed with the Griffins for 2 years. Last Marchin an article that ironically talked about Augustine and hoping he’d sign his ELC, I’d mentioned that Truscott informed Vancouver that he wouldn’t be signing with them. Here’s a quote from the write up (can see from the link): On the U of M side, Jacob Truscott (Port Huron native) told VAN he won’t be signing with them a few months back. I have to think Detroit has at least taken a good look. We’ll find out soon enough.

Well, it took a year, but Detroit was looking to be sure!

HUGE congrats to my former college as Western Michigan has seen the Broncos win the NCAA championship! This is fantastic for the school and the state. The Brown and Gold just got a little more gold!

Axel Sandin Pellikka and Michael Brandsegg Nygard have had a wrap on their post season and will be headed to North America (based on previous statements). The appetite to get ASP over (both have already signed ELC) is high. While the right shot Dman hasn’t given the date of his European departure (and isn’t sure where he’ll report at this point) this should excite every fan.

Personal thought really depends on the “when” of the arrival. With Detroit playing tomorrow and only 2 more games after that, Grand Rapids may be more ideal as the Griffins prepare for the post season and head coach Dan Watson could make line decisions for both players as quickly as possible. Regardless of where the two first rounders land, the excitement is that they’re landing.

After Detroit’s 5-4 overtime win featuring a game tying and game winning goal by Kasper, the appetite surrounding the rookie and upcoming prospects is, rightfully, gaining even more momentum. There have been some articles of “remorse” from the Vancouver area over what exactly Detroit may have found in the acquired pick that sent Hronek out and is bringing Pellikka in. Having the right shot Dman signed and ready to come over will (hopefully) peak some of that remorse.

On the topic of prospects, the last entry posed a question regarding Lightning prospect Isaac Howard. After some an inability to “burn” an ELC year with the club, the Spartan’s top scorer and Hobey Baker winner opted to return for his senior season. With Augustine, Detroit has 2 years before he hits UFA status. The Bolts have one year and it’s been suggested that the forward may be persuaded to sign with another club if the fit is right.

That may be simply speculation, but if there is any truth to it the hope would be that Yzerman approaches his former club and seeks permission to speak with the player’s agent/group and see if there is interest or a fit. IF (and it’s a big if) there is, this is a player that could warrant the release of a high draft pick and/or prospect (opinion). Keep this year’s first, but look at 2026 as a conditional that would turn to 2027 or a prospect or additional pick. This player may be worth spending on.

There will be immediate hesitation, and intra divisional deals raise the price tag. Still, even if the phase never passes the exploratory ask it would be disappointing if the team didn’t at least pick up the phone. Some of you may already be unhappy with the idea, some of you may be curious as to see if there is a potential deal to be made. Please let me know either way. We’ll be doing a ranked “by excitement” column post season, and I am going to inquire about a possible “panel” discussion via Zoom for interested parties. Let’s get interactive on this and see where we land!
