streak stopped by Preds
Summary:
Over the course of the past 4 seasons, Nathan Walker has played a total of 25 NHL games, and accumulated a total of 3 goals. In one night against Detroit (and his first NHL game of the season) he doubled that mark. An AHL journeyman averaging 6 games a year in the bigs came up and got a hat trick while a 4th string goalie held the visiting team at bay. That is beyond embarrassing. Scandella also got his first of the season with the help of an empty net. This is a night where the Bad News Bears of the St. Louis organization just rolled over Detroit.
For the second straight game, the Red Wings look a lot more like the team that picked Lucas Raymond than the surprising start they’ve had with him on the ice. The 19 year old still made his mark on the scoreboard assisting on both Fabbri goals, and so his stock as a potential rookie of the year will continue to rise. Ned’s took a little hit. Seider had some nice looks tonight but took a ding in the plus/minus department. The blues scored 5 goals on 25 shots. Not a good start to the road trip.
The first quarter season has been such a pleasant surprise. A 5 goal win streak was exciting. What we’re seeing in the wake of that streak thus far is cringe worthy. You can’t blame the road for the Nashville debacle, but otherwise Detroit has been much better at home. The Jekyll and Hyde of home vs away is jarring to witness.
The team wasn’t ready for the last game, and that carried over to this. Still, 6 goals on 26 shots is just horrible. Detroit actually outshot the Blues and their special guest in net stood tall.
Walkers first two goals weren’t even challenged by the defense. He shot from a ways out and had a good screen. In his 5th NHL season he has 6 goals and got 3 of them tonight. If you can’t cover that player, what is going on with the defense? This was a pitiful display, and coming off the embarrassment with Nashville, you’d hope that the guys were going to stand up.
Unfortunately, and sadly, this may well be my last post. I was able to “hybrid” watch the game, but the issues with my head injury have made it impossible to keep up. The crew at Hockeybuzz is working hard to get your next blogger in place. This post is my 602nd. I’ve committed to try covering the games while the search is on, but I’m just not getting better. With tomorrow seeing another game so quickly, I don’t know that I’ll be able to follow it at all.
I want to thank everyone that has made this dream come true. For the past 3 seasons, everything has been “unique”. Shutdowns, bubbles, protocols and everything in between. Most exciting has been seeing Yzerman’s first couple of first rounders come in and stand tall. The future is bright. If this is my sign off, please know it is with a heavy heart. If there were a way to watch the games with total darkness and no sound at all (smell-a-vision?) I’d make it work. I love this. Even after a flop like tonight, I’m tucking away the plays by Raymond that set up those goals. The glimpses of Seider and what he’s going to continue to become. There is so much to be excited for and hope outweighs the rebuild blues more nights than not.
Be good to each other and yourselves. Life changes in a second. I’ll never say “forever”, but for now I’ve been shut down by things I can’t get a handle on. Maybe 2022 will be better. Until the turn around, keep watching and reading. Let it be a distraction from a world that continues to wear people down. Enjoy the wins and the best game in the world.
First period Red Wings’ goals:
No Wings goals
Detroit looked to carry the play outshooting St. Louis early, but a 4th string goalie and a 4th line player both had a strong start. Nathan Walker scoring twice is fairly shocking. St. Louis used a power play to even up shots on goal and are in firm control of the game.
St. Louis up 2-0
Second period Red Wings’ goals:
At around 4 minutes in, Moritz Seider skates the puck to center ice, passes between a defenseman’s legs to Larkin. Larkin gets a pass to Raymond who manages to stop the puck completely with a quick tap as Fabbri skates in and goes top corner. The assist by Raymond is one you have to see to understand, for sure, very cerebral.
Fabbri’s opening tally:
St. Louis up 3-1 after Parayko goal
Third period Red Wings’ goals:
Robby Fabbri stems the slaughter a bit with his second tally of the night. A beautiful stretch pass from near the Detroit goal to the St. Louis blue line saw Fabbri skate in all alone and finish with a nice backhand.
Fabbri’s second:
