Simon Edvinsson is picking up points in the CHL and soon the SHL. This year’s first round defenseman will, in all likelihood, fare better than the 2016 selection of Dennis Cholowski. Sent to Seattle via the expansion draft, the former first rounder has signed a 1 year deal worth 900k at the NHL level.
It’s being noted that this was 150k higher than it needed to be, but it’s with the realization that “Cholo” will likely be waived down to the minors due to a crowded blue line. It’s a fresh opportunity, a fresh start, for a career that just couldn’t take hold of a wide open blue line in Detroit.
You can see that Detroit’s third pick in that draft, lept over Cholowski and has 167 NHL games to his credit (compared to 104 for D.C.). Only Givani Smith has any NHL experience from that draft as well at 37 games. Hronek was the “winning” pick for that year.
Seattle is a “wait and see” so far. Las Vegas ended up making some serious noise (and may easily dominate their division this year). It’s hard to think that the Kraken will have similar success, but you never can tell. For Cholowski and Detroit, the split is mutually beneficial. The opportunity is wide open on the blue line, yet it remained unattainable.
There’s a calm before the figurative (and very literal near my home) storm right now. The prospects are heading to Traverse City, Frolunda starts their SHL season on Saturday. Soon after, the NHL will hit the pavement. I’ll be tracking Denver University as well. (Perhaps Boston will get some love). There are some solid Wings prospects out there, and it’s an important year for development. Grand Rapids, of course, holds the promise of a strong season.
I’ll continue to post anything of relevance while we wait for the big show. It will be here sooner than you know it.
