Summary:
The decision to load up on veterans for the blue line combined with a lack of defensive structure seems to be the undoing of the club. Kane opened the scoring in beautiful fashion, but even after the first Detroit was being outshot 12-6. In the end New Jersey got 35 pucks on net to Detroit’s 24. The trend continues. Unless the Wings can get to 4 or more, they aren’t winning games. Injuries in game didn’t help, but an even greater challenge lies ahead.
Detroit may have an internal expectation of the post season but without a boost to the blue line and a change in defensive structure that is a pipe dream. To the press its, “take a step forward”. In the room, it’s a very different set of ambitions.
There is no simple or painless solution. Part of the rebuild game is waiting and being patient. However, a system that constantly sees Detroit under heavy fire has made it clear that LaLonde does not have the right team in place to instill an effective D zone effort.
A 4 day break will do many things, and one can only hope that a moment of clarity is amongst them. LaLonde looks like a coach that wasn’t ready to be an NHL coach. His staff seems to follow suit. For Detroit to get out of this game of hoping to outscore the opposition in a race to 5 the fundamental core and theory of the game has to be changed.
Detroit wasn’t supposed to be a contender yet. The post season bubble was the goal. This path is leading them further from that goal and there seems to be a massive disconnect between LaLonde and the players. With more than their share of injury and other woes, there is plenty for Detroit to overcome. They lack a coach that stands with and for the team. He seems to try and compliment the league and officials at every given chance while the players fend for themselves. Somehow, LaLonde has to get control of this team or Yzerman may well be looking for someone who can.
