Red Wings to sign Mathias Brome After a really tough season, even wins off the ice seem huge. This is my third offering in the Mathias Brome saga, and you can read the other two at these links

Yzerman’s Bromance 1
The draw of potential to grab ice time in Detroit may have been stronger than the draw to try and crack the roster in Vancouver. It looks as though Steve Yzerman is getting his guy, just a day after an extension of transfer agreements for European players. You can read about that

This is very exciting for Detroit, as it pushes the philosophy that Yzerman is not sitting still and staying with the status quo. Bringing players in to challenge for jobs while there are several free agents (RFA and UFA) waiting for word on what their futures will hold is a refreshing change. Stevie Y is reshaping the organization by both actively acquiring talent via trade and here in free agency.
While Brome is not someone I’ve closely followed, hearing that Detroit was interested even a month ago was a good sign that they were serious. This GM keeps things so close to the vest. He never stops working, but seems to run in stealth mode for now. Some of the longer term press joked at the last open Q and A about wanting a weekly session. Well, half joked. So many moves seem to come out of nowhere and it’s become an exercise in futility to try and guess what this GM is thinking.
Ken Holland became somewhat predictable, and at a very different time with the club. Try to reload/retool and remain competitive. Bring back a veteran you didn’t like losing (Quincey, Samuelsson) bring some made in michigan talent for their final run (Modano) and see if those moves were enough to get you back up the mountain. Holland maintained that Detroit fans didn’t have an “appetite” for a total rebuild. He was right, but the result was kicking the can down the street while the cost of the rebuild got higher and higher.
Yzerman has remarked that he knew what he was getting into by coming back to Detroit. He certainly has an even temperament and laser like focus. The scouting continues and now and again we get to hear what’s going to come down the pipe. That is what makes this move exciting as well. It’s SOMETHING. A brutal season made even weirder with the shutdown and a complete cessation of sports. I’m only now fully aware of how much a part of my life catching games almost daily across the league has been. You watch your team to follow development, you watch others because you love the sport. I love this sport. The number of things a pro has to be able to do to compete in this league is incredible. The skating, puck handling, aerobic recovery, physics, all of it is just amazing.
We don’t know yet what Mathias Brome will be, but we know where he will be. Welcome to Detroit!
