Detroit’s game against Columbus was, easily, the most complete of the young season. Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider are getting the attention of fans and teams alike. Another top pick is starting to pick things up in Simon Edvinsson.
I try to limit some of the prospect news, but this one is worth looking at. Simon Edvinsson, who ( a bit like Seider) hasn’t had a lot of excitement from fans initially, is really getting traction as an 18 year old in the SHL. In 12 games, he has 1 goal and 7 assists. And now, he’s logged a season high 25:18 as Frolunda defeated Timra.
There’s a couple of reasons this one hit me. Lidstrom was talking a bit about prospect Albert Johansson (playing for Farjestad). One of the mentions is that, in a men’s league, he’s logging big minutes. Johansson is averaging 16:52 over 10 games and has only eclipsed 20 minutes once. Edvinsson’s average is now above 20, and he logged 25:18 in a regulation game (no OT).
I am very surprised at the differential between the two players at this point. Johansson is 20, and will likely be in North America next year after signing his ELC last summer. Edvinsson could be one more early pick that forces his way over. He’s not signed yet, but that’s not a huge concern. Depending on where Frolunda’s season ends (playoffs wise) he could get a look at North American ice later this year.
This young defenseman was my favorite pick, even if Detroit picked at 4. Dallas GM Jim Nill let Mickey Redmond and Ken Daniels know that he had Edvinsson at first overall. There is a lot to like about this player. Having a left side stud (potentially) that can work with Seider and around the same age would certainly bode well for the program and the future. On an off day for the Wings, take some solace in the fact that Yzerman’s pick is starting to gain a lot of traction already.
