Update - Filip Hronek has been sent to Vancouver along with a 4th round pick for a conditional 1st round pick (NYI from Horvat deal) and a conditional second round pick. A little surprised, but clearly Yzerman has something in mind for the right side. Either an ELC, trade or free agent?

So the Larkin deal is done, and it’s got plenty of $ attached. 8 years, 8.7 million. The interesting part, no signing bonus. Before the MOU this was a much bigger deal and will probably return to that status. Signing bonuses didn’t used to pay escrow. Toronto was keen to use the bonus plus minimum salary to keep players in tow. But, franchises lost a lot of liquid assets beginning with the shut down.

St. Louis made a public statement before the next round of signings that cash bonuses would be left out of new contracts. Regardless, Larkin has a max term deal and I can only imagine the skepticism which has been side by side with the praise of the player. Guesses in the blog were around 8 to 8.5 so this is borderline within that realm.

The salary cap will be interesting this year. Some companies have stepped and offered to take over the Bally Sports broadcasts, but under terms of no further compensation to the NHL. Meaning, the last payment or couple payments wouldn’t be made. Since the contract was around 220 million for Bally (330 for ESPN/Warner) that’s not massive. It’s just enough to make sure that the Governors will bring it up along with the decline in viewership.

So, go ahead and chime in on how you think this ended for Detroit and Larkin. I think the captain did well to get a number above 8.5 and the team can move on to the next order of business. 2 more days to figure out who will stay and who will go.

I heard months ago that “Bertuzzi has played his last game as a Red Wing” from fans (nothing from a source). Vrana remains a fascinating piece at this point. Wallman earned an extension. There have been some pleasant surprises along the way. Two straight days of “the bad old days” have soured more than one disposition. We’ll see if the team can get back on track.
