Previous Post: Veleno called up.

Summary - another game where the result was unfortunate but Detroit made it exciting until the end. They have found ways to keep going and try to make it back.

2 goals in the last 20 seconds and 1 in the first 20 seconds were tough. A turnover that got Marner on the board was a dagger that shut it all down. Moritz Seider’s assist was good enough to surpass Nick Lidstrom in rookie points through 9 games. Joe Veleno had some strong play that garnered a goal and as assist. Filip Zadina had a beautiful power play goal. Hronek scored off of a beautiful feed from Raymond to get the game back within a goal with 30 seconds left. There were positives.

Toronto, as I said in the pregame, is a team that can roll on you. A tough start to the season has this team hungry (borderline hangry) for every goal and every win in a way that they are unfamiliar with. Last year’s Canadian division was an easy touch for the Leafs who rolled into the post season to be knocked out in the first round once again. Even Detroit gave the team a lot to handle. The turnover to Marner was just too much to overcome at goal #5.

Kudos to Veleno. It’s a big night to get a goal and assist. He’ll have another shot in Montreal (more than likely) and we’ll see how it goes. His last call-up started strong but JV was unable to make a go of it. He’s much stronger, looks faster, and had a lot of jump tonight.

It’s tough to lose and look to the positives. Detroit will have tape on playing the “full 20”. Those end of period and beginning of the period goals are brutal. Still, the team never quit. Fabbri’s penalty at the end was unfortunate. I like Detroit’s resolve much better this year.

It’s hard to say enough about Seider. Each game seems to show a half dozen plays that are way above his age. Yes, there are mistakes. But his ability to hold onto the puck and skate are fantastic. He’s logging a lot of minutes. He and Raymond are exciting and continue to add to their rookie year.

Hopefully Detroit can have a better showing against Montreal than the last contest. We’ll see how it goes.

First Period:
Very quick period. Some impressive defensive play by Seider. Late goal by Muzzin tough end to a very high paced back and forth period.

Second Period:

Detroit’s first trip to the power play turns out to be fortuitous. Tavares was unhappy about a blind side hit from Rasmussen earlier and got caught on a slash. With 11:41 left in the period, Zadina ripped a top corner shot after a lot of quick touches by Detroit. Nice passing plays to move the PK box formation. Seider redeemed from a tough pass that turned into a breakaway and gets primary assist.

Zadina’s PP goal:

Around 10:30 Seider made a diving play to stop a stretch pass in the neutral zone. That kid is something special.

Third period:

Tough end to the second and start to the third as within around 30 seconds of game time Toronto scored twice. Joe Veleno came back off of some gritty play that started with Namestnikov battling into the O zone, Rasmussen gets the puck and passes to Veleno who scores. Good hard working shift.

Veleno goal:

After Toronto extended the lead again, Veleno figured into the scoring again as Namestnikov scored after a really nice feed from Veleno (and after taking a stick to the face). Rasmussen line looks good with this cast. Penalty was reversed after discovery that Ras actually clipped Namestnikov.

Namestnikov goal:

A turnover to Mitch Marner seemed to put the game out of reach, but Hronek was able to get back within a goal with 28 seconds left. A beautiful backhand pass from Raymond made its way to the blue liner who launched a powerful shot.

Hronek goal:
