The recent coaching change, bumps in performances, the WJC U20 and a solid program with Dan Watson in Grand Rapids has had me trying to figure out who is going to make the jump over at the end of this year or in camp. Seeing Kasper getting tough minutes and seems to be growing in front of our eyes is exciting. Looking at plays Danielson can make and the player he could be is also something I look forward to. Lombardi may well be getting a look at some point, Johansson seems to be finding his game at the next level, Edvinsson is getting more aggressive. Then, in the wings, are some intriguing characters.

Axel Sandin-Pellikka gets a lot of press. Two years in a row winning “defenseman of the tournament” at the WJC U20. I’ve been fairly clear about being disappointed in his decision to stay in Europe this year (though it may end up having been a better decision than initially thought) it certainly feels like it’s time to bring the highly touted right shot dman to North America. 10 points for Sweden (4g, 6 A) at the WJC and constant praise from the commentary squad only increased the appetite to see the highly mobile blue liner move to the next step. ASP currently ranks 3rd on Skelleftea with 22 points in 27 games.

Jesse Kiiskinen was a player that came into the organization during a rough deal. Inevitably, he was part of the return from Nashville where the focus was a draft pick attached to Walman as he was shipped out of town. So to see the 19 year old right shot winger get 6 goals and 1 assist in 7 games at the WJC allowed fans to focus on what may have been a sneaky good pickup in the middle of a deal that most (if not all) of you were not fans of in shipping out Walman.

Trey Augustine is currently in the midst of a season at Michigan State University with a .931 sv% and 1.97 GAA. The sophomore goalie also grabbed gold with the USA for the 2nd straight year at the WJC and led the Spartans to a big 10 championship last year. With some very big changes heading to Division I hockey including NIL and even some interesting write ups on “open tampering” the sooner Detroit can get Trey on his ELC the better. Cossa and Augustine could be a very good tandem going forward.

Dmitri Buchelnikov is a bit of a wild card but still intriguing. Right shot left winger listed at 5’10” with 35 points (12g, 23a) in 41 games. There is a little bit of “buzz” around the 2022 2nd rounder and it certainly has my curiosity piqued.

I didn’t mention Michael Brandsegg-Nygard. He’s got 5 goals and 5 assists in 25 games, but Detroit really wanted him in Grand Rapids this year. Not sure what he’ll be doing and he’s had some injury issues etc.

Now it’s your turn. Who do you think will get the next callup and who would you most like to see move up from their current team to Grand Rapids or Detroit? There are some exciting prospects and it will be interesting to see who gets to wear the winged wheel for a few games this year.
