Yesterday, an opportunity weeks (maybe a month?) in the making finally lined up and the chance to catch up with Red Wings 2020 5th round pick , 6’2” right shot dman Alex Cotton as he plays his 2nd season in Slovakia. The conversation was fun but insightful. In scrubbing through all the picks from 2019 to 2020 some lists were made and this year Alex saw his production on pace to double with 32 points (5g, 27a) in 35 games compared to 18 points (9g, 9a) in 40 games as his team looks to try and repeat as champs. A fun watch after a tough Wings game last night.

In personal experience (very limited) in any athletic endeavor there was consistent advice. If you had a “bad day at the office”, get right back in there and use that as motivation. If Detroit can take last night’s frustration and fly it to Dallas with a full team application it could be a boost needed to be competitive against another top team in the Stars. Alex Lyon is slated to be in net at this point.
Detroit has plenty, personally, that comes into play when facing Dallas including a broken neck for the Captain as Larkin took a nasty stick shot from Jamie Benn that saw neither penalty nor discipline. The recovery was rough (by all accounts, no first hand experience) but it was a situation that never should have happened. That said, stay out of the box boys. Get your returns on the scoreboard and on the power play.
Jim Nill has been a fantastic GM for Dallas with multiple awards attesting to his efforts. Still, the cup rings this iteration of the team is looking for have been elusive. It remains a driving force and continues to keep the team hungry and a dangerous opponent. It’s a rough road for a rebuilding roster (take that Dr. Seuss) but it’s the road that lies ahead. To quote a very disturbing Alfred Hitchcock episode, “we eat what is set before us, and we like it”.
The difference in the team is an expectation that they will hit the ice looking to spit out a bad mouthful and replace it with some hockey flavored ambrosia. We’ll see what the boys have in store!
