After 2 well played periods Detroit just lost their grip in the 3rd as Washington went on a scoring binge that sealed the game. Detroit has to regroup quickly as they face the toughest schedule in the league.
For whatever reason, the 3rd period take down by the Caps had some extra sting. It was around a 20-20 shot tie game and then goal after goal came from the top team in the East. Again, Detroit is in a place where every game is must win as the beginning of the year up to Christmas was rough. It’s difficult to see a game like this come off the rails. Mrazek made big saves through the first 2 periods and Detroit had solid chances. Washington just exploded for the win in the end.
Larkin’s goal was a nice example of what they couldn’t get enough of. What looked like a bit of a broken play led to a rebound with the captain in the right spot to take advantage. Washington got more than solid goaltending letting in just 1 shot of 23 against.
Let me know your thoughts, this one is a tough pill. Mrazek’s miss on Pierre-Luc Dubois just seemed to snowball quickly into a game that got out of reach. It’s not all on the goalie, not at all. The team seemed to deflate after the game winner watching 2 more go in. Tough end to what had been a good goalie battle through the first two.
1st Period goals:
At 6:36 WASH strike first. 1-0 CAPS
At 12:38, Larkin tied it with his 28th on the year. Chiarot drove to the net, shot (looked like attempted pass to Raymond but hard to say) rebounded to the left faceoff circle where Larkin grabbed it and snapped in a beauty. Good work by Chiarot to set up the play. 1-1
