Dallas has had Detroit’s number for a while. If I heard the broadcast correctly, this is the first win for Detroit vs. Dallas since 2021. The fact that it came on Kane’s 1,300th game and John Keating’s final broadcast was just the icing on the cake. Very classy move by Larkin to have the team acknowledge the long time Detroit broadcaster as he will certainly be missed.
In all honestly, when Dallas scored their 3rd goal short handed and took the lead, it felt like the game was going to go downhill. An unexpected goal from Berggren early into the final frame led a 4 goal outburst that caught fans and the Stars alike off guard. The difference, of course, was the cheers from the fans in a fantastic sendoff for the season and a Dallas team that is looking to avoid injury as they are locked in for the playoffs.
It can’t be overstated, Marco Kasper has grown incredibly in his role since the coaching change. There was speculation of what a year with a better PK (very good tonight), consistent goal tending and some more even scoring up and down the lineup would do for this team. Kasper looks like he could be a big part of the future. Johansson seems to be stepping up. Edvinsson is making plays. Seider has a beauty of a shot when he can use it, just needs a linemate to take some of the responsibility off his shoulders and free up the right shot blue liner for more opportunity to pitch in on the scoring sheet.
Kane’s contribution and Debrincat’s growth on both sides of the puck are incredibly exciting. There were mixed reactions when “the cat” came to town, but all of a sudden he’s the highest scoring Red Wing since Hossa’s cup of coffee in Motown. Berggren’s game tying goal was perfectly executed and Raymond just seems to get better and better at playmaking. Smooth skating, solid passes and a fantastic shot.
There’s a lot to feel good about tonight. Enjoy it, Red Wings fans. It’s been a tough end to the season but good things are on the way. There is a line of young players ready to grab a spot and push this team into the future.
1st Period goals:
Detroit opened the scoring at 4:27 as Johansson entered the offensive zone, Larkin had the puck on the half and found the blue liner who skated in and snapped in the game opening tally. Play started with an important block by Edvinsson that helped Detroit get out of their own zone. 1-0 DET
At 7:15 Been scored his 400th on a nice tuck in. 1-1 (goal was changed, Benn robbed of 400 again)
At 13:52 Debrincat regained the lead with his 37th of the year. Kane passed the puck to Kasper as he entered the O zone on the right hand side, Kasper skated down toward the net, made a drop pass to Kane and Kane sent a backhand pass quickly cross ice to Debrincat who ripped a quick shot. 2-1 DET
At 4:19, Seider grabbed the lead just 3 seconds into a power play. After a faceoff win by Larkin to Raymond, the puck made it back to #53 who skated toward the middle of the ice and wristed home his 8th of the year. 4-3 DET
AT 18:04, after Seider sent the puck from behind the Wing’s net all the way up ice, Rasmussen made sure to negate the icing, passed the puck to the net front and Tarasenko sealed the win with an empty net tally. 6-4 DET
Empty net goal for Detroit!
Scored by Vladimir Tarasenko with 01:56 remaining in the 3rd period.
