Summary:

Full marks for Detroit getting close to an Overtime opportunity. Unfortunately, on 23 shots in the 2nd Dallas scored 4 times and Detroit just couldn’t close the 3 goal gap. They did not quit, but it was a hole dug too deep.

3 of the 4 goals came on the power play, and against the top road PK in the league that’s fairly impressive. The 4th goal came with the goalie pulled so it was 6 on 5 but a sharp play as Debrincat had a nice assist and it can be hoped that this game has him back on track. There are positives to take away.

There’s really no great way to cover the 2nd. Either I’ll get complaints that “it’s not ok for fans to like the team” or soft soap what needs to be a learning moment and reminder that the team can’t be bailed out of lax defensive coverage. Critique and “anti team criticism” aren’t the same thing. It’s fair to say that defensive play needs to be a focus in the coming summer. Goal scoring was the focus last year and it certainly achieved. Just another move forward is needed in addressing team D.

It is nice to see the team come back out and make a game of it. There is a drive to correct and come back. Sprong’s puck steal/assist was a really nice play. Larkin’s point streak continues and Debrincat got on the board. All good stuff. This is going to be a tight race in the East and the team wants badly to be in the mix. Whether or not that manifests at this point the desire and heart is stronger and that’s been a welcome change.

Thursday will see Detroit playing Philadelphia with a slight twist. Carter Hart is taking some time away from the game. The Red Wings will need to come out hard as the schedule continues to be a difficult road. Let me know your thoughts on both the good and bad of what you saw from the team. Will the blueline be upgraded via promotion of 1 or 2 prospects or do you think some outside help will be acquired this summer? Detroit has done a lot to improve in scoring. The need now is to seal up the other side of the ice.

Detroit First Period goals:

It’s all about special teams right now. At 14:33 Perron tied the score at one on the last second of the power play. Nice puck movement led to the veteran walking in from the half wall and scoring off a nice wrister. 1-1

At 16:53, this time with 2 seconds left on the power play, Debrincat scores after Sprong stole the puck from Suter, skated behind the net and got it to the cat. 2-1 DET

Shots: 12-7 DET
Score: 2-1 DET

Detroit Red Wings Second Period goals:
No second period goals for Detroit

Shots: 32-19 DAL
Score: 5-2 DAL

Third Period Detroit goals

After giving up 4 goals on 23 shots in the second, Detroit entered the third with a much different standing than after the first. Larkin scored Detroit’s 3rd power play goal and 3rd overall at 11:28. Raymond went down the right side half wall to just below the goal line and found Larkin in the slot. The Captain scored his 19th of the season on a nice wrist shot. 5-3 DAL

At 16:46 Compher scored Detroit’s first non power play tally to make it a one goal game. Although, with the goalie pulled it was still a 6 on 5. Larkin won the draw to the left of the net, Debrincat got the puck to the net and Compher drove it home. 5-4 DAL

Shots: 38-34 DAL
Score: 5-4 DAL
