As soon as San Jose scored, I knew what I’d hear. For sure the first message came “Detroit’s been playing sloppy, I was worried about this one”. The comments section will likely have some version of that over and over from people who waited through a 7 game win streak (the first in 13 years for the club) to be able to get a jab in.
Detroit’s streak came to an end and the road ahead isn’t easy. Tarasenko got on the board for the first time in 19 games, but for every goal Detroit could manage San Jose had an answer. Husso can’t be blamed for everything, but the team just cannot win with him in net for whatever the reason. Kasper watched the empty net goal go in. He was making the right move to try and intercept the player but stopped skating and Husso got beaten. Sloppy defensive zone play and timely saves for San Jose combined for a bad night at the office.
Hoping the best for Motte, that was a nasty hit to the boards. His arms seemed to shoot straight up which can be a sign of a head or spinal injury. Obviously was bleeding when he was helped off the ice.
So now, the team has to respond. Coach McLellan will run some drills and the youtube video that came out today guaranteeing Detroit a post season birth (not mine, and not trying to throw anyone under the bus) may have been premature. The team still has several issues to address.
Early in the game, it seemed like there was too much passing instead of shots. Players were fighting the puck. Again, just a bad night at the office for the team after a very good stretch. We’ll see how they respond but looking at the schedule this is definitely a game fans were hoping to see Detroit grab a “W” in.
1st Period goals:
Just 1:45 into the game SJ scores as Wings were sloppy in their own zone. Husso made one good save but unable to make the second. 1-0 SJ
At 17:41 SJ scored again short handed as Detroit looks lackadaisical at best on their power play and line change. 2-0 SJ
Shots: 12-6 DET
Score: 2-0 SJS
2nd Period goals:
At 1:28 Detroit got back within one as Edvinsson shot the puck and it bounced off the pipe to Tarasenko who got a much needed goal (first in 19 games) and gets the team within 1. 2-1 SJ
Shots: 18-14 DET
Score: 2-1 SJS
3rd Period goals:
Detroit just doesn’t have it tonight as SJS scored just 26 secs into the third. 3-1 SJS
At 6:05 Tarasenko got his 2nd of the night as he skated into a JLA style board bounce off of a blue line shot from Gustafsson. 3-2 SJS
At 7:40 San Jose scores on the power play. 4-2 SJS
Lucas Raymond got the team back within 1 at 9:56 4-3 SJS
But SJS scored a minute later at 10:57. 5-3 SJS
Empty net goal by SJS seals 6-3 loss
Shots: 28-24 DET
Score: 6-3 SJS
