Update:

$4MM base salary
$1.5MM at 10 games played
$250K at 60 games played
$500K if his team makes the playoffs
$250K if he records 60 points and his team makes the playoffs

Update - Tampa didn’t waste time, according to this report.. The
Bolts are able to do 8 years since acquiring Guentzel’s rights. This chunk could lend credence to Stamkos at least looking at the market, but no hard numbers are in.

Patrick Kane may in fact return to Motown. No definite, but as you can see Friedman tweeted that there is growing momentum. I’d reported earlier in the summer that it was likely he was gone citing some Red Wing press releases. I’ll gladly be wrong on that one to see #88 back in red.

If you missed day 2’s draft summary for Detroit, you can check it out along with videos for all but the very last pick. As soon as the draft was over, the Trouba question was bandied about in the comments and on some discussion panels. An interesting twist (whether this is the case or not) was reported by Darren Dreger:

TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reports that Trouba has yet to been asked to waive his no-trade clause and amid the speculation on Saturday. His sources have denied the rumour of him heading to the Red Wings.

You can read his thoughts on that and multiple other issues, two of which involve Tampa Bay and Toronto.

The Score is reporting that Trouba was “shocked” to hear his name on the trade block. I don’t know if it was Ryan Suter buyout level shock, but at least sounds unexpected. If Trouba wasn’t informed of the negotiations (assuming in good faith they were happening) the Dman can easily halt that by excluding Detroit in his list of acceptable destinations. This would also signal some poor communication from NYR and makes anything happening feel less eminent.

Tampa Bay made some waves by acquiring the rights to Jake Guentzel. It was being reported that Carolina wanted to extend last season’s acquisition but it seems clear that JG wasn’t on the same page. This puts the rumored offer to Stamkos back into light. It still seems almost impossible that Tampa would offer 3m x 8 years, a friend informed me of a rumored higher dollar short term offer that would turn into a year by year deal. There is skepticism about this offer, and we won’t know what Tampa will have to work with until/unless Guentzel is signed. If that number hits 7 or higher the team will have 9M or less to work with to fill a roster that stands at 17. Nothing is certain until the deal is done, but it certainly has the market attention.

Finally, it’s widely known that Toronto wants to get ahead in line with pending UFA Chris Tanev as they traded for his negotiating rights 2 days before free agency. (As I’m typing this, news hit that Jack Campbell was bought out in Edmonton). The flurry of activity from two divisional rivals who desperately want to see longer post season stretches may be impactful in how the market turns. Carolina has a full plate and Guentzel moving on may shift attitudes on Necas. It’s already been rumored that after a GM shift Pesce became a player the ‘Canes would now like to see extended.

Names jumping on and off the rumor is a bit more than dizzying. The only perspective left is, believe it when you see it. Toronto and Tampa are obviously negotiating with players they don’t want to see hit the open market. Trouba is not yet known to have made his list and can make life difficult for the office if he is indeed unhappy with the rumored negotiations. Jack Campbell, well, plenty of teams are looking for goalies. There was more player movement at the draft than expected, including one a friend tells me of that had a player signing autographs as he found out he was traded. Ouch.

Hang in there, the chips will fall where they may. GMs probably left their respective flights with a phone in each hand yesterday after leaving Vegas.
